History of Maruti 800- Then & Now
Before the Alto & Dezire, there was an AAM ADMI KI car who ruled over the streets for 30 years!!!
The legendary Maruti 800 ๐๐
In 1971, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi proposed the production of a 'People's Car' for India - the contract of which was given to Sanjay Gandhi. Before contacting Suzuki, Sanjay Gandhi talked with Volkswagen AG for a possible joint venture.
However, it was Suzuki that won the final contract since it was quicker in providing a feasible design. The resulting car went on to rewrite automotive history in India as Maruti 800.
It was so popular at that time that if someone was talking about Maruti, he surely was talking about the 800. Even today, hearing this name we remember our childhood memories where we use to ride it with charm & pride.
It was in 2004 that Alto became the highest selling car in India overtaking 800. Alto stayed at the top for a straight 15 years only to be dethroned by the Maruti Suzuki Dzire in 2019.
But why am I telling this story?
Simply, because as a child we had Maruti 800 at one of our family members on which we had many beautiful memories. With this post, I just wanted to give a tribute.
What was your first family car and the beautiful memories with it?
