The Evolution of Indian Automobile Industry

Today when we go on road, we see a lot of automobiles!!!

But do you ever thought how did reach here, what the history behind it??

The first car that came on Indian roads was in early 1897 and the first Indian to own a car in 1901 was Jamshedji Tata. It was in 1942, that 𝗛𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 manufactured the first automobile in India.

After India’s independence, the GOI tried to boost the sector by encouraging the manufacturing of automobiles. Before that, the cars were imported directly.

The automobile sector formally came into being in the year 1952 as it marked the introduction of passenger cars in the country. Manufacturers like Hindustan Motors, Premier Automobiles and Standard Motors came into the picture. Even SUV’s started being manufactured by Mahindra and Mahindra, Bajaj, Standard Motors, etc.

In the 1980s the boom happened when global automobile companies came in India looking to collaborate with local manufacture to grasp the Indian market. The prime examples are Hero Honda & Maruti Suzuki.

With these collaborations, the automobiles became accessible to the Indian audience at a very low cost and soon there were either 2 wheeler or 4 wheeler in almost every middle-class family.

Today Indian Automobile sector contributes to 7.1% of India's GDP & 22% of the country's manufacturing GDP.

It's really a matter of pride for Indian Automobile leaders to reach this level. More than taking pride of what they have achieved, i think they would be proud of the glorifying history that they have made in the past.
